The Riverside Walk from Salisbury Cathedral to Harnham is the single most beautiful walk in the city — a flat, easy 1.5-mile route (3 miles return) following the River Avon through water meadows that have been unchanged for centuries. It was this view — the Cathedral spires reflected in the river, framed by flowering meadows — that John Constable painted repeatedly in the 1820s.
The walk begins at the west end of the Cathedral Close and leads south through the water meadows to the village of Harnham. The Old Mill Hotel marks the turnaround point at Harnham — an ideal spot for a riverside lunch or cream tea before heading back.
The surface is mostly flat and firm but can be uneven in wet weather. The walk is largely pushchair-friendly in dry conditions. Dogs are welcome off lead in the meadows.
