About Charter 1227

Charter 1227 is one of the finest restaurants in Wiltshire — a modern British restaurant occupying a spectacular medieval building on Salisbury's historic Market Place. Named after the year Salisbury was granted its royal charter, the restaurant draws deeply on the city's heritage while serving food that is confident, precise and modern.

The menu changes seasonally, built almost entirely around local Wiltshire and West Country ingredients — native breed meats from nearby farms, vegetables from kitchen gardens, fish from Cornish day boats. The approach is restrained but impactful: clean, balanced flavours and impeccable technique.

Tasting menus run to seven courses at dinner. The wine list is intelligently curated with good coverage at every price point. Service is warm, knowledgeable and unfussy — the experience is elevated but never stuffy.

Phenomenal set lunch on a Wednesday — four courses for what felt like an embarrassingly reasonable price given the quality. The wine suggestions from the sommelier were brilliant. Cannot wait to retur

We have been visiting Charter 1227 twice a year for three years and it just keeps getting better. The spring menu was the best yet — the heritage tomato dish was genuinely revelatory.

Excellent in almost every respect. Food was creative and beautifully executed. Service perhaps slightly stiff but perfectly professional. The dining room in this medieval building is very special.
