About The Haunch of Venison

The Haunch of Venison is one of the oldest pubs in England — a Grade I listed building that has been serving ale since 1320, making it among the most historic drinking establishments in the country. The interior is extraordinary: low oak beams, original stone fireplaces, a mummified hand in a glass case (genuinely), and a layout that has barely changed in centuries.

Food is traditional and well-executed — Sunday roasts are excellent (beef, lamb and pork), served until late afternoon. The lunch menu focuses on proper pub classics: ploughman's, pies and the famous Haunch burger. House ales are well-kept and rotate seasonally.

The atmosphere is incomparable in Salisbury — there is nowhere else in the city with this kind of layered, authentic history. An essential stop on any visit.

One of my favourite pubs in England. We visited on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime and had the place almost to ourselves. The food and drink were excellent and the atmosphere was magical. Absolutely essenti

Brilliant historic pub. Can get very crowded on weekend evenings but the upstairs bar is usually quieter. The ploughman's was the best I've had anywhere. Worth seeking out the staff who know the histo
