About Stonehenge

Stonehenge is the most iconic prehistoric monument in the world — a circle of massive standing stones on Salisbury Plain, nine miles from Salisbury city centre. Built over thousands of years starting around 3000 BC, the monument's original purpose remains debated: a burial site, an astronomical calendar, a place of ceremony and healing — likely all of these at different periods.

The visitor experience is managed by English Heritage. A modern visitor centre provides excellent context before the site itself — artefacts, reconstructed Neolithic dwellings and a film about the monument's history. From the visitor centre, a land train or 15-minute walk takes you to the stones themselves, which can be viewed from a path circling the monument.

For those wanting to get inside the stone circle itself, Stone Circle Access — sunrise and sunset visits limited to small groups — can be booked directly with English Heritage. These visits are exceptional and highly sought-after.

One of the great experiences. The atmosphere at the site is genuinely powerful. I gave 4 stars only because you cannot get close to the stones on a standard ticket — book Stone Circle Access if you wa
