A breathtaking hilltop Iron Age fort with 360-degree views — Salisbury's hidden gem

Figsbury Ring is one of the most rewarding short walks near Salisbury yet surprisingly unknown to visitors. This National Trust-managed Iron Age hill fort sits on a prominent chalk ridge 4 miles northeast of the city, offering extraordinary 360-degree views that take in Salisbury Plain, the Pewsey Vale, and on a clear day, as far as the Mendip Hills.

The walk through farmland to reach the ring passes through typically English countryside — hedgerows alive with birdsong, open fields of chalk downland, and scattered ancient field systems. The fortification itself is beautifully preserved, with earthwork ramparts still standing several metres high in places.

Inside the ring, the old interior ditch creates a unique double-ringed appearance that archaeologists believe may have been used for seasonal livestock management or ritual purposes. A picnic inside the ring on a summer afternoon, surrounded by skylarks and with views to the horizon, is a genuinely special experience.
