The iconic walk through water meadows with the most photographed view in England

The River Avon Meadows walk is Salisbury's most beloved route — a gentle stroll through ancient water meadows that delivers one of the most iconic views in English countryside: Salisbury Cathedral rising majestically above a patchwork of green fields, exactly as Constable painted it. This is the postcard image of Salisbury.

Starting from the city centre, the route crosses the historic Town Path across the water meadows managed by the National Trust. Depending on the season you'll spot kingfishers darting along the riverbank, grey herons standing sentinel in the shallows, and in spring, the meadows burst with wildflowers. End at the Old Mill in Harnham for a well-earned drink with a perfect cathedral view.

This walk is suitable for all ages and abilities. The path stays flat throughout and most of it is well-maintained. In winter, some sections can be muddy so waterproof boots are recommended.
