About Salisbury Museum

Salisbury Museum occupies The King's House — a superb 13th-century building in the Cathedral Close. The museum holds one of the finest collections of prehistoric artefacts in Britain, anchored by the Stonehenge gallery, which contains objects from the World Heritage Site spanning 4,000 years: tools, ceremonial objects, jewellery and human remains.

Beyond Stonehenge, the museum covers the full sweep of Salisbury's history — Roman finds from Old Sarum, medieval maps and manuscripts, the Giant and Hob Nob (the city's famous ceremonial figures used in medieval processions), Wedgwood ceramics and a recently expanded natural history collection.

The museum runs regular temporary exhibitions, family events and school holiday activities throughout the year. Entry is free for under-5s. The building itself — Grade I listed — is worth seeing in its own right.

Superb museum in a beautiful medieval building. The Stonehenge gallery was genuinely moving — seeing objects from the site itself brings the monument alive in a way visiting Stonehenge alone cannot. F

Well curated and informative. The Stonehenge collection is world class. The building itself is a wonderful 13th century house. Plan at least 2 hours to see it properly.
