About Harnham Water Meadows

The Harnham Water Meadows are the most famous natural landscape in Salisbury — a flat, ancient water meadow system south of the Cathedral that has remained unchanged for centuries. It is the view that John Constable painted repeatedly in the 1820s: the Cathedral spire reflected in the River Avon, framed by blossoming meadows.

The walk from the Cathedral along the water meadows to Harnham is the single best free activity in Salisbury — about 1.5 miles each way, flat and easy, with the Cathedral spire in view almost the entire time. The route ends at the Old Mill Hotel in Harnham, which makes an ideal stop for a riverside lunch or cream tea.

In spring the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers. In winter, when the meadows flood and the Cathedral is reflected in the standing water, the view is arguably even more dramatic.

The most beautiful free walk in Wiltshire. The Cathedral reflected in the flooded meadows in winter is exactly what Constable painted and it is as magnificent now as it was 200 years ago. Absolutely m
