Old Sarum is one of the most remarkable historic sites in England — a spectacular Iron Age hillfort occupied continuously for over 3,000 years. Perched on a chalk ridge north of Salisbury, the site has layers of human occupation spanning prehistoric times, Roman Britain, Saxon settlement, Norman conquest and medieval habitation before it was finally abandoned in the 13th century.
The Norman castle ruins at the summit date to around 1070. Within the castle enclosure are the footprints of the original Salisbury Cathedral — built by the Normans in 1092 and abandoned in 1220 when the new Cathedral was built in its current location in the valley below. The story of why the Cathedral moved is fascinating and told well in the English Heritage visitor centre.
The 360-degree views from the summit are superb — the current Salisbury Cathedral spire is visible to the south. The outer Iron Age earthworks can be walked for free at any time. English Heritage members enter the inner castle area free.
